In this graphic novel depiction of the life of Robert "Yummy" Sandifer, Roger, the 11-year-old narrator, tries to make sense of the violence that surrounded Yummy both during his life and his death.
In 1994, violence (again) erupted in Chicago's Southside neighborhood of Roseland. Yummy Sandifer, an 11-year-old member of the Black Disciple's Nation (BDN) gang, shot the bullet that killed his 14-year-old neighbor as she sat on her steps. After three days on the run and heavy media attention, Yummy's own gang "brothers" turned on him and executed him to end the attention.
A quick and accessible read, Neri's graphic novel portrayal of Yummy's life will have readers questioning why so many children end up in tragic situations like his.
