This disturbing yet thought provoking story is unlike any other I've read. Evie Boyd is a teenager growing up in California in the late 60s, and she's not even that exceptional of a teenager. Her grandmother was a movie star, but that was a long time ago, and all that's really left of that life is some money and a house.

Evie is lonely, somewhat insecure, unsure of what her future holds after her parents' divorce and a falling-out with her best friend. But when she catches a glimpse of a group of girls in the park, girls on the fringe of what she considers normal, she finds herself captivated. In search of love an acceptance, Evie is easily pulled into the wayward group by Suzanne, an older girl whose mysterious life is simply thrilling when placed beside Evie's humdrum existence. As Evie spends more and more time at the run-down ranch that is home to experiences and people she's never imagined, her own reality becomes clouded. Little does she know that the group's charismatic leader and their exotic behaviors will soon lead to her to an edge that she never imagined.
