My rating: 3 of 5 stars
BEFORE: Reena is a teen on a mission to graduate early, move out of her small Florida town to the big city of Chicago and college, travel & write. She's also in love with Sawyer - and has been for as long as she can remember. Then suddenly they are together, play it safe Reena and bad boy Sawyer. Their fast and sometimes reckless relationship leaves Reena pregnant and Sawyer gone...
AFTER: Even though Reena didn't make it to Chicago or travel the country like she expected, she's found love again - in her daughter Hannah. It's been two years of major adjustment, disapproval from her dad and stepmom, alienation by Sawyer's parents, but Reena's managed to settle back into a life she can manage. She's got a beautiful daughter, is attending classes at a local college, works hard, and even has a solid boyfriend - but everything is about to change. The prodigal son returns after two years of zero contact, and all of those feelings toward Sawyer immediately resurface.
This coming of age tale hits on many of the familiar themes: drugs/alcohol, sex, teen angst, family feuds, and friendship woes. The characters are believable (though a bit too naive at times) as they figure out that life doesn't always go as planned.
